Track and Field is Oregon’s most dominate and popular sport other than football and basketball.

Bill Bowerman was a nationally respected track and field coach at the University of Oregon, who was constantly seeking ways to give his athletes a competitive advantage. He experimented with different track surfaces. Phil Knight was a talented middle-distance runner from Portland, who enrolled at Oregon in the fall of 1955 and competed for Bowerman’s track program. Upon graduating from Oregon, Knight earned his MBA in finance from Stanford University, where he wrote a paper that proposed quality running shoes could be manufactured in Japan that would compete with more established German brands.

Steve Prefontaine was one of the most dominant runnings to every run track at the University of Oreogn. When he ran he wore the waffle shoe that Bill Boweman had created with his wifes waffle iron. That shoe was so light and he was winning so many races that that’s when Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman created Blue Ribbon Sports and it eventually changed to Nike. Bill Bowerman passed away a few years ago and Steve Prefontaine died in his early twenties ending a large track carreer ahead of him. Phil Knight is still currently the CEO and president of Nike in Portland, Oregon.

Football

Oregon football is another of the Universities most popular sports. It’s popular right now for it’s uniforms and how dominant their team is right now. If they win tonight they will play in the rose bowl in Pasadena, California on New Year’s Day.

Oregon Football Uniforms

University of Oregon football team is finishing its biggest-ever uniform makeover. One that will give it a dizzying 384 combinations this season. Oregon is in its fourth full uniform redesign since the 1996 Cotton Bowl, giving the team almost as much renown for its garish collection of ever-changing attire as for its success on the field. Ducks have been called “Team Nike” because of the largess of the Beaverton, Ore.-based athletic giant and its co-founder Phil Knight. He graduated from Oregon and has given tens of millions to the school and its athletic department.

“This changes the notion of what’s a uniform,” he says. “They’re not very uniform.”

Or good-looking, he adds: “There’s good design, and there’s bad design. This is bad design.”

I think that Oregen has the sickest unifroms out of any division one college football team. Three hundred and eighty four combinations is a lot. It’s cool how much Nike donates to their football program and all the equipment they get. My dad went to Oregon and he has done some business with Nike. Our family is huge Oregon fans and my dad and I plan on attending the Rose Bowl in Southern California on New Year’s Day against the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Football

Football program began in 1893 and played its first game on February 22, 1894, defeating Albany College. In 1919 where it shared the facility with the track and field team until Autzen Stadium was completed in 1967. While in the Pacific Coast Conference, the Ducks won five conference co-championships in 1919, 1933, 1948, and 1957. The Ducks have participated in one BCS Bowl game since the inception of the BCS in 1998, defeating the Colorado Buffaloesin the 2002 Fiesta Bowl.

This Thursday if Oregon is able to come out with a win, they will most likely play in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Oregon’s running back, Blount was suspended from the team after punching a player on Boise State after their loss. About three weeks ago he was on the practice field practicing with Oregon’s scout team and is now currently the second string running back behing LaMichael James.

Basketball

Ducks men’s basketball team played its first season in 1902-1903 under head coach Charles Burden. Howard Hobson was hired in 1936 and took the basketball team nicknamed “The Tall Firs” to win the first NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in 1939. Tall Firs achieved a 29-5 record, capped by a 46-33 victory over Ohio State University in the championship game.

Baseball

1964, in the re-organized Athletic Association of Western Universities, Oregon was once again North Division champions. That was their last title, or share of a title, before dropping the sport in 1982. Oregon has never won a Pac-8 or Pac-10 baseball title. UO made one College World Series appearance, in 1954, and was eliminated from the tournament after losing to Arizona and Massachusetts. In July 2007, the university announced that Oregon will again field an NCAA Division I baseball team beginning with the 2009 season. In the Ducks first game in PK Park they defeated the defending national champions, the Fresno State Bulldogs, 1-0 on a walk-off single by senior Andrew Schmidt. A sellout crowd of 2,777 was on hand for the game.

From 1936, the Ducks played baseball at Howe Field. After the university canceled baseball in 1981, the field was converted to use by the Ducks’ women’s softball team. From 1982-2007 the University of Oregon was limited to a club team as it was the only school in the Pac-10 without a varsity team. The university built their new baseball stadium, PK Park, in what was a parking lot adjacent to Autzen Stadium which was completed for the 2009 baseball season. The field will be shared by the minor league Eugene Emeralds.

Venues

Oregon Ducks football complex is located north of the main campus. The complex includes Autzen Stadium where the games are played, the Len Casanova Center where the locker rooms and training facilities are located, the indoor practice field called the Moshofsky Center, and the outdoor training field named Kilkenny Field. These facilities are said to be among the best in the nation. much of the price tag paid for by the prominent university boosters Phil Knight, Ed Moshofsky, and Patrick Kilkenny. Also in the football complex is PK Park, the University of Oregon baseball stadium, completed in 2009 for the reemergence of the baseball program, located in the northeast corner of the parking lot.

Tyler is a very interesting guy. He likes baseball, airsofting and his girlfriend Kelsey.

His dailing schedule on Monday’s are to go to the weight room and sit around and do nothing, go to school, hang with his girlfriend at lunch, go back to class, then go home and play call of duty. For the thanksgiving break, he went to Oregon and complained because it was too cold. He got a pair of new headphones, a new knife, two new patches and a new flag.

Tyle considers himself a red neck. He is obsessed with guns, knives, American flags, and the army.
